dow jones news today 8 July 2026

Dow Jones — Latest News (July 8, 2026)

Headline: Dow down ~800+ points (about 1.5–1.6%), trading near 52,100, as U.S.–Iran ceasefire tensions blow up and oil prices spike.

What's happening

  • President Trump told reporters at the NATO summit in Ankara that the ceasefire with Iran is "over""I think it's over. I don't want to deal with them anymore... they're scum," he said, and separately threatened "we're going to hit them hard tonight."

  • This follows U.S. Central Command's "series of powerful strikes" against Iran on Tuesday, in retaliation for attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

  • The U.S. Treasury revoked the sanctions waiver that had allowed Iran to legally export oil, adding to supply-disruption fears.

  • Oil is the big mover: Brent crude jumped as much as 8%, touching ~$80/barrel; WTI surged over 7% toward $76.

Sector reaction

  • Energy stocks up: Diamondback Energy (+3%), Occidental and APA (+2.5%), Chevron and Exxon also higher — benefiting from the oil spike

  • Fuel-sensitive names down: Airlines and cruise lines fell — United (-3%), Carnival (-3.5%), Norwegian (-3%), Delta (-2%)

  • Tech/chip weakness continues to compound the sell-off (a carryover theme from the last few sessions)

Global spillover

European markets fell in sympathy — Germany's DAX (-2.4%), France's CAC 40 (-2.2%), UK's FTSE 100 (-1.7%). Asian markets had already closed lower, led by South Korea's Kospi (-5.4%).

The bigger picture

Markets had been pricing in a smooth de-escalation path in recent weeks — analysts note this flare-up is forcing investors to reassess geopolitical risk after a period of complacency. This comes right after the Dow had set fresh record highs above 53,000 just days earlier (July 6–7), so today marks a sharp reversal from an otherwise bullish run.

Bottom line: It's a headline-driven, fast-moving situation — Trump has signaled more strikes are coming tonight, so expect continued volatility as the Iran situation develops.
