        This is the biggest escalation since July, breaking a month-long lull. 

        What happened overnight (Sept 2-3) 

        • US completed latest wave of strikes late Tuesday — US Central Command says it hit IRGC targets: air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities, communications sites. Axios reports 2 Iranian government tankers also hit 

        • Iran retaliated immediately — IRGC announced attacks on US bases in Jordan, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Iraq's Kurdistan region. This is described as the heaviest exchange in weeks 

        • Civilian toll: Iran says at least 19 dead, including 4 at a wedding party near Sirik on Strait of Hormuz coast, plus 50-68 wounded. Red Crescent says a 4-year-old child among killed at wedding. Iran Foreign Ministry calls it "war crime". Health minister says 18 total killed, 108 injured in latest US strikes. IRGC says 4 personnel killed in Kermanshah 

        • US view: CENTCOM spox Tim Hawkins: "US military never targets civilians, unlike IRGC". US says strikes were retaliation for Iran trying to add sea mines to Hormuz and firing 8 missiles at US base in Jordan
