Dow Jones Index news 3 September

Here is the latest on the Dow Jones Industrial Average today, Sep 3, 2026:

Today's Action - Rebound Back Over 53,000

The Dow is bouncing back after a rough start to September. After closing Tuesday below its 50-day moving average for the first time in nearly 5 months at 52,766.88, it reclaimed the 53,000 level on Wednesday.

Preliminary close Wednesday: +299.37 points, or +0.56%, to 53,066.25. Other reports had it up around 326 points earlier in the session.

The S&P 500 gained 0.46% to 7,666.82 and Nasdaq Composite gained 0.46% to 26,219.85, so all three major indexes ended higher, snapping a three-day losing streak.

What drove it

Broad participation: Unlike recent sessions driven by a few heavyweights, most Dow components were in the green today.

Top point contributors:

  • Johnson & Johnson +3.4%, adding ~45 points after UBS hiked its price target

  • Salesforce added ~26 points, continuing its August strength

  • Goldman Sachs contributed 19 points

  • FactSet showed Nvidia, Disney and Boeing as the Dow's top gainers Wednesday

Small-caps actually led — the Russell 2000 outperformed large-caps, with airlines, gold/silver miners and regional banks leading sectors.

Why it was shaky earlier this week

  1. Bond selloff: 10-year Treasury yield spiked to its highest since 2023, sitting around 4.8%, on fears of inflation and government debt.

  1. Geopolitics & Oil: US and Iran ramped up airstrikes in the biggest exchange since July, pushing oil prices higher.

  1. Soft data: ADP reported fewer-than-expected private jobs added in August and core capital goods orders were revised down.

  1. Seasonal headwind: September is historically the weakest month — Dow futures had slid 255 points Tuesday on this risk pile-up.
