Status: no ceasefire, shifted mostly to economic warfare The active fighting has largely given way to a US economic pressure campaign, though Iran and its proxies remain engaged militarily elsewhere in the region. Trump, who originally predicted the war would last six weeks, now says it will take "as long as necessary."

Sanctions escalation Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced what he's calling Iran's "economic asphyxiation," including new sanctions this week targeting institutions like Egypt's Banque Misr (for its UAE operations) and Iranian banking figures. The US has also pressured China — Iran's top oil customer — to comply, though Beijing has refused, calling the sanctions illegal.

Iran's economy under strain Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian became the first senior official to publicly admit the sanctions are hurting, saying "we are in a war situation, and we must accept these wartime conditions." Iran's currency has hit record lows, and petrochemical plants have suspended production amid power shortages.

Strait of Hormuz standoff The US maintains a naval blockade on Iranian ports and says it has escorted around 750 million barrels of oil out through the Strait since mid-July, while Iran has exported zero barrels by sea (though it's moving crude overland to China and pursuing a gas pipeline deal with Russia via Azerbaijan). US allies have cast doubt on Trump's claims that the strait has been fully de-mined.

Diplomacy stalled but not dead Both sides say they're open to talks, but each blames the other for the impasse. Qatar, Oman, and Pakistan have been trying to mediate.

Lebanon/Hezbollah front still hot Hezbollah has rejected the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire framework and refuses to disarm, so fighting continues there even as the US-Iran fighting has cooled.

Domestic US criticism growing Senator Jack Reed (top Democrat on Armed Services) said "not a single objective has been achieved," and there's been criticism over Trump's continued oil-and-gas stock trading while overseeing the war.
