Here's what's on the economic calendar, today and looking into next week:

Today, Friday, July 17: Around 52 economic events are scheduled, though the marquee releases already happened earlier this week (retail sales and jobless claims came out Thursday).

This past week's key releases:

  • Retail sales (Thursday) — showed consumers were pulling back partly due to gas spending
  • Jobless claims (Thursday) — came in lower than expected, a positive labor market signal
  • Producer Price Index (Tuesday) — fell 0.3% for the month vs. an expected flat reading; annual inflation rate at 5.5%

Next week, July 20–26, is a bigger one. Key events lined up include:

  • Monday: People's Bank of China rate decision, Canadian and New Zealand CPI
  • Tuesday: UK labor market data
  • Later in the week: German data, Australian figures, and the European Central Bank meeting — likely the week's headline event

Earnings season is also in full swing, with plenty of S&P 500 companies reporting alongside the macro data.
