Pete Hegseth
told senators on Tuesday the war in Iran has cost $37.5 billion so far.
That figure
was given during a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing where Hegseth
appeared with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Dan Caine.
Key points
from his testimony:
* **New
total:** $37.5 billion, an increase of nearly $8-9 billion since the last
public estimate. The previous estimate in mid-May was $29 billion.
* **What it
covers:** The estimate covers certain costs from the beginning of the war on
Feb. 28 through today, as well as other anticipated costs through September /
early September, and includes operations and maintenance costs as well as
military pay. Hegseth said the figure included certain aspects of the war as
well as anticipated costs through September 30.
* **Why he
was there:** Hegseth said the war, which Congress has not authorized, had cost
$37.5 billion so far, and he asked them to approve another $70 billion in
"supplemental" funds, in part to replenish depleted missile supplies.
Other reporting from the hearing puts the administration's supplemental request
at $67 billion for the Pentagon as part of a larger $87 billion request.
The Pentagon
comptroller had previously said the $29 billion figure did not include damage
to U.S. military facilities.
