Here's where things stand for markets today, Friday, July 24, 2026:
Market snapshot (pre-market)
Futures are pointing to a tentative recovery after Thursday's sharp selloff. As of early morning:
Dow futures: +0.5%
S&P 500 futures: +0.2%
Nasdaq-100 futures: +0.1%
VIX: ~18.9
US stocks eyed a tentative recovery before the bell on Friday as investors assessed a new set of global tariffs against a backdrop of AI jitters, rising oil prices, and elevated bond yields. Oil prices fell on Friday, with Brent crude down about 2% to trade below $99 per barrel, though it was still set for a weekly gain after touching $100 earlier in the week.
Why Thursday was so rough
Sharp drops for Alphabet and Tesla dragged the U.S. stock market on Thursday to its worst loss in a month. Final numbers:
Dow: -506.93 pts (-0.97%) → 51,711.65
S&P 500: -1.21% → 7,408.30
Nasdaq Composite: -2.15% → 25,137.69
U.S. equities fell as oil prices surged amid escalating conflict in the Middle East, while investors weighed earnings from two of the largest companies in the world — with Alphabet's results fueling concerns about increased AI spending. Both Tesla and Alphabet posted negative free cash flow for the second quarter, and Tesla shares dropped roughly 14% on its report while Alphabet fell about 7%.
Treasury yields also climbed, with the 10-year briefly rising above 4.7%, prompting traders to increase expectations of another Fed rate hike later this year.
